Summer School on Human Rights - 2014

Application deadline: 8 June 2014

Environment and protection from discrimination based on sexual orientation represent two areas connected to human rights where, in recent years, the international community has shown particular commitment.

The creation of an Independent Expert on Human Rights and the Environment in March 2012 by the Human Rights Council and the first official United Nations Report on discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation prepared by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, later discussed within the Council in March 2012, are two of the most notable examples of the level of attention that the world is paying to this issues. Much work, however, still need to be done in order to ensure that in both areas human rights receive the protection they deserve.

Against this background, the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), in cooperation with John Cabot University, is organizing two specialised Summer Schools on Human Rights devoted to such topics.

The Summer Schools will take place in July 2014 at John Cabot University in Rome, Italy, according to the following programme:

    • Environment and Human Rights (07-11 July)
    • Gender Identity and Human Rights (14-18 July)

The Summer Schools represent a unique opportunity for post-graduate students and young professionals to interact with academics, international experts and practitioners in a stimulating learning environment, where traditional lectures are complemented by group works, case studies, role-plays and discussion of real scenarios.

The faculty of the Summer Schools is composed by leading scholars and academics from John Cabot and other Universities, representatives of the United Nations system, international human rights bodies and the civil society.

The Summer Schools also represent an invaluable opportunity to enhance participants’ professional networks. Upon completion of each course UNICRI and John Cabot University will award a certificate of participation.
