Turin, Italy, January 2018. Volker worked with UNICRI during the past 6 years. It is difficult to put into words how important his contribution was. Volker was our Encyclopedia on any political and technical issues related to the proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction. He was always ready and willing to help his colleagues to improve their understanding of national and international issues and challenges.
His incredible experience and knowledge were a constant source of guidance in the process of finding constructive and practical solutions. His advice and support were crucial in enabling UNICRI to better assist countries in developing national strategies on CBRN risk mitigation. He also made important contributions to the EU CBRN Centres of Excellence and the International Network on Biotechnology.
He was always very respectful of others’ work, being also very frank and direct. We fondly remember him sometimes saying to us: “This does not make any sense.” The whole team loved him and sought his insights at work and even after work, discussing international best practices during moments of relax.
His energy and commitment, his ability to tell stories and his willingness to listen to other colleagues’ opinions were inspiring for everyone, and especially for younger colleagues who looked up to him as a role model. It was a pleasure to work with him. We will miss Volker greatly.
