The Institute designs and implements projects on trafficking in human beings, in particular women and children, with a special focus on trafficking for sexual exploitation. These projects envisage the development of different components: technical assistance in institutional capacity building; justice reform and advanced training for judges; prosecutor and police; raising awareness activities, assistance to the victims; and micro credit programmes.
After the success of the pilot programme aimed at reducing the exposure of Nigerian women and adolescents to traffickers, and in support of the UNite to End Violence Against Women Campaign, in 2008/2010 UNICRI implemented a second programme to counter human trafficking from Nigeria to Italy.
Empowerment activities, together with action-oriented research aimed at assessing and disseminating good practices of assistance to the victims of trafficking, awareness raising campaigns and education activities are implemented in Nigeria, in close cooperation with local NGOs.
