New trends in international crime: the international response
Brussels, 11 February 2009. The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), the Madariaga – College of Europe Foundation and the UN Regional Information Center (UNRIC) have organized a Briefing on the most relevant emerging crimes, such as maritime piracy, counterfeiting, crimes of cultural heritage, and environmental crimes. The briefing will take place on Wednesday, 11 February 2009 at 9.30, in the premises of the Madariaga – College of Europe Foundation, Rue Royale 87, B - 1000 Brussels, Belgium.
During the Briefing the emerging phenomenon of maritime piracy will be highlighted and discussed with the involvement of two representatives of the European institutions, Mr. Emanuele de Rosa from the European Commission, Directorate-General Energy and Transport and Commander Snowy Lintern, Liaison Officer of the EU Naval Force – Somalia. Maritime piracy is a contemporary crime problem on the rise that requires joint cooperation of the actors of the international community, to promote the exchange of information and best practices and identify stakeholders, tactics, and criminal routes. Improving the knowledge of the new trends in international crimes by sharing information and expertise and strengthening cooperation between countries and international organizations are the keystones in the fight against the new global threats. The Briefing aims to reach a common understanding and to be an opportunity for identifying new strategies and partnerships.
