Security measures and technical solutions for major events and expanding cities

Abu Dhabi, 18 May 2009. UNICRI, in collaboration with the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Interior and under the Patronage of His Highness Lt. General Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan will convene the First International Symposium "Security measures and technical solutions for major events and expanding cities” in Abu Dhabi from 18 to 20 May 2009.

The Symposium is the initial phase of a longer-term UNICRI programme to boost dialogue and collaboration between security technology providers and end-users.

The Symposium, convened within the framework of UNICRI's International Permanent Observatory on Major Event Security (IPO), will be a major initiative within the United Nations system. Opening the event will be Lt. General Seif Abdullah Al Shaafar, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior of the United Arab Emirates and Mr. Sandro Calvani, Director, UNICRI. Participating in the Symposium, along with representatives of UNICRI and the UAE Ministry of the Interior, will be representatives from a wide group of UN Member States’ and experts from prominent technology providers. The initiative will enhance dialogue between the security sector and technology providers and promote ways of optimizing the use of available resources. The aim of the Symposium is to learn from past experiences and promote effective solutions for the future. The event will provide the opportunity to identify technological gaps and address innovative solutions to these issues.

The Symposium will take the form of a series of inputs from those involved in security for major events and the protection of vulnerable targets - particularly in the context of rapid growth cities.

Participants in the Symposium will share experiences on security planning for past and future major events including: the Beijing Olympic Games; the Presidential Inauguration of Barak Obama; the Vancouver Winter Olympics and; the FIFA World Cup, South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014.

The Symposium will also focus on how innovative approaches and technology solutions may have applications for longer term security, beyond the major events context, especially with reference to enhancing the security of cities with rapid growth.
