In Memory of the United Nations' Victims of Terrorism

Turin, 21 May 2009. UNICRI pays tribute to the victims of terrorism and inaugurates the new premises of its library, the largest documentation and information centre in the world on crime prevention and justice. The new building is named after the memory of the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello, killed in the tragic bombing of the United Nations Mission in Baghdad, on 19 August 2003.
The Centre will be inaugurated on Friday 29 May 2009, at 11.30 a.m. in Turin, Via Ventimiglia 165, in front of UNICRI’s Headquarters. The civil society, as well as representatives from national institutions and international organizations will attend the opening ceremony.The Centre will be inaugurated by the Councillor for Culture of Turin, Mr. Fiorenzo Alfieri and by UNICRI’s Director, Mr. Sandro Calvani. Mr. Ernesto Ferrero, writer, critic and Director of the Turin International Book Fair and Ms Elisa Galletta, dubber, will read stories and quotes related to the victims of the Baghdad attack. WHO Goodwill Ambassador, and former Messenger of Peace, Ms. Anna Cataldi, will talk about her friend Sergio Vieira de Mello. Ms. Laura Dolci-Kanaan, UN officer and wife of Jean-Sélim Kanaan, a UN servant who died in the Baghdad bombing attack, will also be attending to outline the importance of memory. Mr. Staffan de Mistura, the current UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Iraq and Head of UNAMI, will be participating to the celebration in videoconference from Baghdad.
During the event, two videos produced by the United Nations on the victims of terrorism will be presented.
The building, kindly offered by the City of Turin, will house the “Vieira de Mello” Documentation Centre. The new facility will include more than 18.000 monographs, 1.100 journals and yearbooks, tens of thousands documents by the United Nations System, other international and regional organizations, national institutions and NGOs, multimedia material, grey literature on crime prevention and criminal justice issues.
Moreover, the Centre will be able to provide an on-line access to all its services, such as the library catalogue, the criminological thesaurus, bibliographic databases, directories, journals' tables of contents, full-text articles, abstracts of monographs and personalized alerts targeted to the needs of its users.
