UNICRI launches the 'International Short Course on Principles of Ethics'
A first in the United Nations' and in the European Community's Systems
Rome, 16 July 2009. The first UNICRI short-course on Principles of Ethics in the United Nations’ and in the European Community’s Systems will take place at the Sapienza’s Campus in Pomezia (University of Rome) from November 16th to November 20th, 2009.
The synergy between a UN agency, such as UNICRI, and the University of Rome – Sapienza, offers a unique perspective on the principles of ethics. The Course is moreover organized in cooperation with Ce.A.S. (Centre for Advanced Studies on Terrorism and Political Violence) and the Consorzio for the University of Pomezia.
The Course aims to provide students and young professionals with a comprehensive understanding and a detailed perspective on economic, legal and social aspects related to the principles of ethics in the United Nations and in the European Community.
Understanding the relationship between the two models is absolutely crucial considering that EU’s growing civilian and military generational capacities have a sustainable peace mission with a focus on peacekeeping conflict prevention. European Union’s mission is to strengthen international security in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter while providing policies on ethics and multilateral solutions to common problems.
The programme will cover a wide range of topics revolving around four core components: the Principles of Ethics in the UN and EC Systems, Ethics in the Council of Europe’s Convention of Human Rights, Ethics and the European Union’s Policies in Research, and, finally, Ethics and International Policies.
The issues that will be addressed during the Course include: supranational rule of law, consensual democracy, social freedom, sustainable peace, inclusive equality, social solidarity, sustainable development, and good governance. The programme will cover case studies in the ethics of biomedicine, in the Courts, in Security Technology, and ICT and Internet. Furthermore, the course will also examine the Consultative Bodies of the UN, FAO IAB, and the ethics of the EU in the European Group.
The Short Course adopts a multidisciplinary approach and the programme will be comprised of daily workshops, which will offer the possibility to interact with highly recognised international experts on the most up-to-date topics regarding the subject of principles of ethics.
The scheduled lecturers will include international experts, university professors, judges and officials from institutions under the UN and the EC, such as UNESCO and the Council of Europe.
The course will take place in the Pomezia Campus “Selva dei Pini”, which hosts a UNICRI office dedicated to advanced training, applied research and technical assistance. There, students will experience a highly innovative and integrative form of education in equipped classrooms and laboratories. Sports facilities (i.e. swimming pool, football fields, and tennis courts) will also be present and accessible, and visits to Rome or to the seaside will be organised over the weekend.
