UNICRI and the U.S. Department of State sign an agreement
Establishing rehabilitation programmes and countering the appeal of violent extremism and terrorism
New York, 20 September 2011. The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and the U.S. Department of State signed an agreement for the implementation of the project "Disengagement and Rehabilitation of Violent Extremists and Terrorists". The US Department of State has contributed to this new initiative with 1.287.000 USD. The aim of the 18 month pilot project, which is envisaged to start in January 2012, is to provide assistance to Member States in establishing effective rehabilitation programmes and in countering the appeal of violent extremism and terrorism particularly in the prison environment. This will be undertaken by conducting research, identifying best practices and providing capacity building assistance.
UNICRI's mandate is to assist intergovernmental, governmental and nongovernmental organizations in their efforts to formulate and implement improved policies in the field of crime prevention and justice. This initiative follows the approach of the Institute regarding security governance and aimed at supporting Member States by providing advice and assistance in the implementation of policies designed to counter the appeal of terrorism within the CTITF framework. Other donors providing financial support to UNICRI include Norway and the Netherlands.
