Regional Experts meet to identify future interventions to mitigate CBRN risks
European Union Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellences Initiative
Within the framework of the European Union Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Centres of Excellence (EU CBRN CoE) Risk Mitigation Initiative, the First CBRN CoE Regional Experts Round-Table Meeting for South East Asia was held in Metro Manila, Philippines from 27 to 29 April 2016. It provided a venue for South East Asian experts to update each other on CBRN risk mitigation efforts, to discuss regional priorities and to identify possible project interventions for the near future.
Since 2010, the 10 partner countries of the EU CBRN CoE for South East Asia have been meeting regularly in the format of National Focal Points Round-Table Meetings with the main purpose of coordinating activities. The Regional Experts Round Table Meeting is a new format that incorporated more detailed technical discussions, also supported by experts from the European Union and the United Nations to bring in a global dimension.
The meeting was honoured by the presence of Mr. Oscar Valenzuela, Assistant Secretary, Acting Executive Director of the Anti-Terrorism Council-Program Management Center at Office of the Executive Secretary, Office of the President, Republic of the Philippines, who is the Head of the EU CBRN CoE Regional Secretariat for South East Asia (SEA) which is hosted in the Malacañang Palace.
The EU CBRN CoE Risk Mitigation Initiative involves 53 countries in 8 regions of the world and is funded by the European Union and jointly implemented by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC). The initiative has been developed with the technical support of relevant international and regional organizations, the EU Member States and other stakeholders, through coherent and effective cooperation at the national, regional and international level.
The EU CBRN CoE Risk Mitigation Initiative aims at strengthening regional security and safety by sharing good practices and capabilities, by developing guidelines by identifying and deploying resources to respond to the needs identified by partner countries and by supporting the development of national CBRN policies.
