Best Practices towards the Accreditation of Laboratories

An international workshop bringing together representatives from the Philippines as well as Directors and Heads of prominent laboratories and hospital departments of Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Lao PDR and Brunei Darussalam took place in Manila.

The aim of the workshop was to promote and facilitate the exchange of best practices from South East Asia on biosafety and biosecurity in order to enable the accreditation of laboratories. The workshop took place within the framework of Project 7: “Guidelines, procedures and standardization on bio-safety/bio-security” which seeks to reinforce capacity-building in the partner countries in the field of biosafety and biosecurity and to provide recommendations tailored to their specific needs. The project also provides a comparison of legislations and regulations in the field of biosafety, biosecurity and laboratory management systems and encourages the exchange of know-how and the sharing of technical expertise. The desired final stage is to adopt for each partner country a tailored approach in order to set the basis for an accreditation guide for laboratories.

The three-day workshop is part of the European Union (EU) Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence (CoE) Initiative which aims to mitigate CBRN risks of criminal, accidental or natural origin by promoting a coherent policy, improving coordination and preparedness at national and regional levels and by offering a comprehensive approach covering legal, scientific, enforcement and technical issues. The initiative involves over 40 countries in 8 regions of the world and is jointly implemented by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI). Overall coordination of the Initiative is carried out by representatives from both the JRC and UNICRI in close cooperation with the European Commission’s Directorate General for Development and Cooperation - EuropeAid (DG DEVCO) acting as the Initiative's Decision Making Body and the European External Action Service (EEAS).
