EU CBRN CoE Project 19 workshop held in conjunction with the World Congress on CBRNe Science & Consequence Management

Within the framework of the European Union Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence (EU CBRN CoE) Initiative and in conjunction with World Congress on CBRNe Science & Consequence Management, the workshop “Enhancing Information Security Management Systems Defending CBRN-related Information, Materials, and Facilities from Evolving Threats” was held in Zagreb, Croatia from 11-12 April 2015.
The EU CBRN CoE initiative aims at strengthening regional security by sharing good practices and capabilities, developing guidelines as well as identifying and deploying resources to respond to the needs identified by partner countries.
The workshop in Zagreb was organized as part of EU CBRN CoE Project 19 “Development of procedures and guidelines to create and improve secure information management systems and data exchange mechanisms for CBRN materials under regulatory control. The aim of Project 19 is to enhance the awareness of regional, governmental and academic institutions on the importance of information security for CBRN facilities and the steps that can be taken to enhance information security. Project 19 is implemented by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) of the United States, the National Nuclear Laboratory of the United Kingdom (UK), and the University of Glasgow (UK).
The first day of the workshop mainly focused on the practicalities of information security breaches, including: threats, vulnerabilities and consequences of such breaches, while the second day focused on best practices and guidelines for optimal information security. The workshop was held in conjunction to World Congress on CBRNe Science & Consequence Management which was attended by hundreds of officials and subject matter experts from over 40 countries. The 2015 Congress represents the 15th edition of the event, including the Congresses held under the prior rubric, "CBMTS series."
The EU CBRN CoE Initiative is funded by the European Commission and implemented in cooperation with the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC). The European External Action Service is also involved in the follow-up of the initiative. The initiative is developed with the technical support of relevant international and regional organisations, the EU Member States and other stakeholders, through coherent and effective cooperation at the national, regional and international level. The initiative involves 50 countries in 8 regions of the world.
