The Role of Big Data Analytics in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda
UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) Side Event
Geneva, Switzerland, 24 March 2020. The side event, organized by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), will discuss how Big Data Analytics and Visualization can contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. Big Data technology can be used to examine large data sets, containing a variety of data types, and uncover hidden patterns and correlations.
The event will offer a practical demonstration of how UNICRI, with the technical support of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), tested Big Data technology to analyze organized crime investments into the legal economy.
With more than 50 years of experience, UNICRI’s work focuses on Goal 16 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Agenda, that is centered on promoting peaceful, just and inclusive societies, free from crime and violence. Justice, crime prevention and the rule of law are the basis for fighting poverty and reducing inequalities while enhancing economic growth, stability and empowering communities.
The session will represent an opportunity to explain the process of navigation within large and complex datasets, analysis of different data and identification of trends. UNICRI, with the support of CERN, will show how Big Data analytics and visualization can help Member States to identify trends on the investment strategies adopted by criminal organizations and to explore innovative approaches to estimate and visualize the magnitude and impact of illicit financial flows on socioeconomic development and progress.
This session will also explore how this experience can be tailored and expanded to analyze different data, networks and trends that can potentially contribute to the achievement of other Sustainable Development Goals.

Background
In response to the growing range of multidimensional, cross-cutting and cross-border threats to both the stability of Member States and their populations, UNICRI contributes to mitigate the modern-day security threats through research, technology and innovation, helping to increase safety and security globally. To this end, the Institute promotes and supports the development of specific and viable strategies to prevent, detect and respond to a wide variety of security threats. With its work, UNICRI has explored and tested innovative ideas and has shared good practices and lessons learned globally. UNICRI strove to enhance inter-agency cooperation to prevent and mitigate threats. UNICRI advances awareness of new technologies and how they can be used by Member States and all sectors for the common good or exploited by criminals to expand and diversify their activities. The Institute implements technology-related trainings, workshops and mentoring programmes to support law enforcement and the judiciary, and to guide policy-makers in the making of new laws to respond to these new security threats.
