Celebrating the Launch of the UNICRI Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics

On Wednesday, 10 July 2019, UNICRI in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and the Municipality of The Hague, will organize an official ceremony at the Peace Palace to celebrate the presence of the UNICRI Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in the Hague and its work to-date.
Advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics are increasingly relevant for our everyday lives and promise to fundamentally alter how we live, work, communicate, and move about. The UNICRI Centre is dedicated to advancing knowledge of these technologies from the perspective of crime, justice and security and to exploring their use for social good and for contributing to a future free of violence and crime. The UNICRI Centre supports the achievement of Goal 16 of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development on peace, justice and strong institutions through innovative technological tools.
The ceremony will touch upon on some of the central themes the UNICRI Centre has worked upon since its establishment in the Hague in 2017, including the opportunities these technologies present for law enforcement; the importance of ensuring respect for human rights; responsible innovation; and the risk and dangers of the malicious use of these technologies by criminal and terrorist groups.
The ceremony will be opened by Pascalle Grotenhuis, Director of Protocol and Host Country Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Saskia Bruines, Deputy Mayor of the City of the Hague, and Bettina Tucci Bartsiotas, Director of UNICRI.
