Opening ceremony of Summer School on Migration and Human rights
Rome, 12 July 2016. To mark the 5th edition of Summer School on Human Rights, this year focused on Migration, UNICRI and John Cabot University organised the screening of the Golden Bear winning documentary Fuocoammare (Fire at Sea) directed by Gianfranco Rosi. The screening took place on 11 July at the Aula Magna theatre at John Cabot Guarini Campus.
Fuocoammare captures life on the Italian Island of Lampedusa, which is at the forefront of the European migration crisis, and documents the lives of migrants and of those working to help them. The event began with the opening remarks of the John Cabot University’s Associate Dean, Pamela Harris, who thanked all participants and introduced the discussion.
The screening was followed by a discussion on the issues and topics raised in the documentary. The discussion, moderated by Nicholas Boston, Associate Professor of Communications at Lehman College, featured contributions from Guy Goodwin-Gill, Emeritus Fellow of All Souls College Oxford; Stephane Jaquemet, UNHCR Regional Representative for Southern Europe, Silvia Scarpa, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Political Science, John Cabot University, as well as the producer of Fuocoammare, Donatella Palermo, and Pietro Bartolo Director of Lampedusa Hospital. Mr. Bartolo plays a central role in the documentary.
The event was opened to the participants of the Summer School, representatives of UNICRI and John Cabot University, and students from other universities.
This event represented an informative and enlightening experience on the difficulties faced by migrants while trying to enter and claim asylum in Southern Europe. The meeting addressed the many issues and challenges surrounding migration in the Mediterranean area.
