First week of the Summer School on Human Rights successfully concluded
Rome, 15 July 2014. The 2014 edition of the Summer School on Human Rights, jointly organized by UNICRI with the John Cabot University in Rome, Italy, successfully concluded its first week of activities.
The first week of the course focused on Environment and Human Rights. The course involved academics from the John Cabot and other universities, United Nations staff, and representatives of international human rights organizations. After the first module on capacity-building through the provision of legal and scientific background information on the issue, students had the possibility to engage with very specific topics such as the right to health in the context of the European Court of Human Rights; climate change and migration; sustainable food management; eco-mafia and waste management; and environmental conflicts.
During the closing ceremony of Friday 11 July, the participants were awarded with a UNICRI and John Cabot University certificate of attendance.
Classes at the Summer School have resumed with the second week-long course running from 14 to 19 July and focusing on Gender Identity and Human Rights.
Leading experts and practitioners are involved, offering a broad and specific perspective on the issue. Among the topics addressed by the course are: religion and gender identity; gender-based persecution and refugee status; sexual rights and sexual health; gender identity and hate speech/hate crimes; and other most pressing issues.
