First Training Course to Enhance Judicial Knowledge on Artificial Intelligence
Dubai (United Arab Emirates), 15 October 2019. Together with the Dubai Judicial Institute (DJI), and with the support of the Government of Dubai, the UNICRI Centre for AI and Robotics co-organized a first specialized training to enhance judicial knowledge on artificial intelligence. Whether crimes, contracts or torts, AI has far-reaching ramifications for the law and it is paramount that the court system, legal professionals and the legal system in general are adequately prepared to handle for advancements in AI. In this regard, the course focused on issues such as the legal definition of AI, the dangers and realities of algorithmic and output bias, the attribution of responsibility in cases where harm is done by an AI system, and specific AI applications that can support the judiciary in the performance of its duties. At the same time, as this technology becomes increasingly integrated into society, the courts will play a central role in the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, such as the rights to privacy, equality and non-discrimination. To this end, the ethical use of AI, the overarching human rights framework and the notion of AI governance were discussed.
Unique insights on Dubai’s AI Roadmap and ethical guidelines for the development of AI were also provided in light of the launch of Strategy for AI of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which envisages an e-government capable of fully relying on AI for public services and data analysis by 2031.
The course was attended by more than 100 participants from the UAE, including representatives from the Dubai Courts, the Office of the Public Prosecutor, the Dubai Police, the Ministry of Justice, the Office of the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, as well as by representatives from 12 members of the Euro-Arab Judicial Network (Algeria, Belgium, Egypt, France, Italy, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, the Netherlands, Palestine, Romania and Spain).
The course also marks the first joint activity between UNICRI and the DJI under a new cooperation agreement. Speaking on the new partnership, Judge Dr. Jamal Al Sumaiti, Director General of DJI, observed that: “The first fruit of this cooperation is the organisation of the first edition of the 'Shaping the Future of Judicial Knowledge' workshop under the theme ‘Artificial Intelligence Today and Beyond.’ DJI continues to seek the best partners from around the world to enhance its performance and support its mission of providing the legal and judicial sectors with the best possible opportunities to enhance competencies and qualifications as well as exchange expertise to maintain the competitiveness of the UAE in this field.”
