Two training sessions involving representatives from 6 countries successfully concluded

The Insubria Center on International Security (ICIS) is pleased to announce the positive outcome of two intensive in-presence training sessions for the North Africa and the Atlantic African Façade regions. The training sessions took place within the framework of the project “Knowledge development and transfer of best practices on bio-safety/bio-security/bio-risk management”, which is part of the European Union Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence Initiative (EU CBRN CoE).
The first training session was organized by the lead partner of the project, ICIS – Insubria Center on International Security – and involved experts from Algeria, Tunisia and Libya experts. The session took place on June 16th-20th, 2014 at the premises of the University of Insubria. (Palazzo Natta, in Como). The lectures aimed to improve knowledge on requirements for biosafety professionals; biosafety and biosecurity teaching methodologies; legal, ethical and environmental issues and biorisk management assessment methods. Furthermore, a lecture was dedicated to analysing the E-learning Platform tool developed within the framework of the project. This cutting-edge instrument aims to promote knowledge sharing among European and national experts.
The in-presence course represented an important opportunity to meet national experts from North Africa, to foster the project network and, to deepen and develop knowledge through the sharing of professional and academic experiences, and best practices.
The second in-presence training was organized by project partner France Expertise International (FEI). It was addressed to experts from the African Atlantic Façade Region (Morocco, Mauritania and Gabon).
The course took place at the premises of the « Laboratoire de Recherche et d’Analyses Médicales de la Fraternelle de la Gendarmerie Royale » in Rabat, Morocco, on June, 30th to July, 5th 2014.
The course provided the participants with theoretical and practical knowledge concerning biosafety, biosecurity and biorisk management. The discussion focused on legal aspects of biosafety and biosecurity, comparing national and international legal systems, and biorisk assessment methods and management. Experts were able to share knowledge as well as professional and academic experiences providing an important training and exchange opportunity for all the participants.
The EU CBRN CoE Initiative is funded by the European Union and implemented in cooperation with the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI). The initiative is developed with the technical support of relevant international and regional organisations, the EU Member States and other stakeholders through coherent and effective cooperation at national, regional and international level. The initiative involves 47 countries in 8 regions of the world.
