2nd edition of the Hackathon for Peace, Justice and Security
The Hague, 16 June 2019. Within the framework of the 2nd edition of the Hackathon for Peace, Justice and Security organized by the Data Science Initiative and the Municipality of The Hague from 14-16 June, UNICRI, through its Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, invited participants to find solutions to the “True or False” Challenge on fake videos.
Advancements in video manipulation technology and the programmatic generation of video, including artificial intelligence-based manipulation techniques, such as DeepFakes, the Face2Face algorithm, the FaceApp, and Lyrebird, are giving rise to a world where it is increasingly difficult to distinguish between what is fake and what is real. The destabilizing and dangerous effects of the ‘fake news’ have already affected our society. Left unchecked, these new technologies can further amplify negative dynamics and even serve fraudulent and criminal purposes.
The aim of the UNICRI challenge was to create tools for detection of manipulated videos that can be made available to support law enforcement, security agencies, the judiciary, media and general public to verify the authenticity of images and videos.
More than 150 highly skilled “hackers” participated in the event, working both day and night to tackle to challenge. Ultimately, Open DSE, an educational initiative by data scientists and engineers from the Netherlands, with its Fake Sniff tool was selected as both the winner of the True or False challenge and the overall winner of the Hackathon. Fake Sniff is a state-of-the-art neural network architecture for image classification and web-application which simplifies interaction with the user.
As a follow-up, the UNICRI Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics will organize a workshop in The Hague on fake-video detection to further refine the technology created during the challenge and discuss how it can made available to support law enforcement, security agencies, the judiciary, media and the general public. The winning team, as well as the runners-up of the Hackathon, will be invited to take part in the meeting alongside other relevant stakeholders and experts.
