EU CBRN Risk Mitigation CoE Initiative

Singapore, 9 July 2014.

Funded by the European Union

An international workshop bringing together directors and laboratory scientists of prominent organizations from Singapore as well as European experts was organized in Singapore from 9 to 11 July, hosted by the DSO National Laboratories.

The aim of the workshop was to promote and facilitate mutual knowledge and the exchange of practices and experiences on chemical and biological waste handling practices, emergency management and security issues within laboratories.

The workshop took place within the framework of the international project “Knowledge development and transfer of best practice on chemical and biological waste management in South East Asia” (Project 6), which seeks to increase awareness and skills of biological and chemical laboratory staff¬ and practitioners on safe and secure chemical and biological waste management at facilities, in line with international standards and national experiences.

The Project is implemented by the FORMIT Foundation (Italy) together with the Azienda Ospedaliera Polo Universitario Luigi Sacco, Milan (Italy), and it involves cooperation with institutional actors in 8 South East Asian countries.

The three-day workshop was part of the European Union (EU) Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence (CoE) Initiative which aims to mitigate CBRN risks of criminal, accidental or natural origin by promoting a coherent policy, improving coordination and preparedness at national and regional levels and by offering a comprehensive approach covering legal, scientific, enforcement and technical issues.

The EU CBRN CoE Initiative is funded by the European Union and implemented in cooperation with the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI). The initiative is developed with the technical support of relevant international and regional organisations, the EU Member States and other stakeholders through coherent and effective cooperation at national, regional and international level. The initiative involves 47 countries in 8 regions of the world.
