The German Federal Office of Economics and Export Control organizes a Central Harmonized Training at the Mercure Hotel Frankfurt in Eschborn.

The German Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA) is conducting a Central Harmonized Training with experts from all over the world. The 3 day training event which started today and will last until 16 May is taking place at the Mercure Hotel Frankfurt in Eschborn Ost, Germany.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr. Georg Pietsch, Director General of BAFA, emphasized that “the fight against the proliferation of CBRN weapons is indispensable for international peace and security.” Dialogue, cooperation and the sharing of knowledge and best practices between the experts from different countries is crucial to improve prevention and mitigate relevant risks.

Delegates from the regions African Atlantic Façade, Central Asia, Middle East, and North Africa are coming together to gain a deeper understanding of import and export control procedures of CBRN items. The training will enable participants to share in their own countries the skills and knowledge acquired. The event which has a special focus on legal aspects, licensing, customs/enforcement and interagency cooperation is bringing together representatives from different European Union Member States with expertise in these areas.

The Central Harmonized Training is a key event of the Knowledge development and transfer of best practice on CBRN import / export monitoring project which started on 1 January 2013 and is implemented by BAFA in cooperation with the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) as a consortium partner. One of the main objectives of the project is to raise awareness in the area of import and export control procedures of CBRN items. Within the framework of the project, BAFA has carried out numerous activities in cooperation with its partner countries. The Central Harmonized Training builds upon the outcomes achieved so far and is an essential cornerstone in the future collaboration with the partner countries.

The project is part of the European Union Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence Initiative (EU CBRN CoE). It is implemented and funded by the European Commission in cooperation with the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute UNICRI. The European External Action Service (EEAS) is also involved in the follow-up of the initiative. The initiative is developed with the technical support of relevant international and regional organisations, the EU Member States and other stakeholders, through coherent and effective cooperation at a national, regional and international level.
