UNICRI welcomes World Congress on CBRNe Science and Consequence Management
Tiblisi, 5 June 2014. The 21 meeting of the World Congress on CBRNe Science and Consequence Management was opene d on 2 June 2014 in Tbilisi, Georgia with approximately 250 persons in attendance. Among these were high-level government officials, representatives from relevant international and regional organizations, scientists and crisis managers who will discuss current trends, present and future challenges and will, thereby, seek to offer solutions to one of the most complex issues and challenges facing the international community today.
UNICRI, with the financial assistance of the European Union, supported the organization of the congress together with other national and international partners as part of its CBRN Risk Mitigation and Security Governance Programme.
The Programme entails the application of a holistic approach through which all stakeholders, while operating autonomously, can establish common goals; identify and manage resources to achieve these goals; clearly allocate responsibilities and tasks; elaborate functioning channels of communication; create a security culture based on common learning; and ensure that lessons learnt are incorporated and absorbed throughout the whole system.
The CSCM Congress, which will run until 5 June 2014 was organized by the International Organizing Committee (IOC) under the under the auspices of the Government of Georgia and focuses on the science underlying Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive (CBRNe) counter-proliferation and counter-terrorism issues, and the management of related events, with the goal of promoting a better understanding and minimizing the risk of the CBRNe threat.
It is expected that this meeting of the CSCM Congress will contribute to the global effort to mitigate CBRN risks of criminal, accidental or natural origin.
