In 2008 UNICRI and the Municipality of Bari signed an agreement in order to carry out the project Picturing Victimization in the City of Bari/Italy. The project envisaged the implementation of an empirical comparative Survey on victimization risks and urban crime. In particular, the research focused on the magnitude of the phenomenon of predatory crimes and on the perception of security in the City.
The Survey had many practical uses, such as monitoring changes in victimization rates over time, understanding risks and victims’ decisions to file police reports, examining fear of crime and developing crime prevention strategies and urban security policies.
The Survey provided an empirical overview on urban security perception supporting future policies on crime prevention to be developed by the City of Bari.
